Story-telling and self-deprecating humor have made Lincoln native and University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate Tom Stephens an enjoyable staple at The Ticket for both listeners and co-workers. Since the station’s launch in 2011, he has co-hosted “Gaskins & Stephens” from 11am-2pm weekdays with John Gaskins.
While entertaining listeners and annoying each other with their heated and sometimes silly banter, the two won the 2015 Nebraska Broadcasters Association first-place “Gold Award” for their interview with state title winning Winnebago boys basketball coach Jeff Berridge. In 2014, they won both NBA and Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association awards for their interview with Husker football’s first openly gay player, Eric Lueshen.
Prior to joining The Ticket, Tom logged over 25 years in Lincoln radio, including the statewide Husker network — co-hosting talk shows, conducting pre-game and post-game interviews, and hosting scoreboard shows. He’s also been a part of many high school football and basketball broadcasts both before and since The Ticket.
A believer of “picking your favorite teams by age 6 and sticking with them throughout life,” Tom has suffered mightily as a Royals, Vikings, and Huskers nut… and lets us feel his hilarious pain daily.
