What happened to the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy?

riptrophy

After Nebraska beat Minnesota in 2016, I noticed the players didn’t take the trophy off the field with them. The trophy disappeared and was no where to be found. That’s because there is no longer a trophy at all. Why is that?

Nebraska and Minnesota will no longer be playing for a rivalry trophy. That means the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy is officially gone. I spoke with both athletic departments and sources say there never was a trophy to begin with.

“It was just a social media thing. There never was a trophy to begin with,” University of Minnesota official said.

Nebraska doesn’t want to deal with a certain coach from the past around their program. That was the main reason of getting rid of the trophy.

The next question is why did Nebraska accept the trophy in 2015 and not in 2016? Unfortunately I could not get an answer to that question.

Some Nebraska players didn’t even know the trophy existed, even after taking it from Minnesota in 2015. The Nebraska – Minnesota series could have been a fun rivalry. It’s been a series that has been a very competitive series since Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference in 2011. Minnesota is also the second closest university to Nebraska geographically in the Big Ten.

So will there even be some sort of rivalry trophy going forward between the schools.

“No, that will not happen,” Minnesota official said.

The craziest part about this story is that both schools are playing it off like it never happened. It’s like the trophy never existed. But everyone has seen the trophy. They can’t say it never existed when it did exist. That just doesn’t make any sense.

The trophy was made organically, not through a corporate sponsor.

Unfortunately that wasn’t enough. Nebraska and Minnesota can say goodbye to the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy. Because it is officially gone, and it’s never coming back.
