An Omaha native and UNL graduate, John Gaskins helped launch The Ticket in August 2011 and has enjoyed life back in Lincoln covering the Huskers. John co-hosts “Gaskins & Stephens” from 11am-2pm and is The Ticket’s program director and high school game announcer.
While aiming to entertain at least themselves with their daily banter on the big Husker topics of the day, John & Tom also won the 2015 Nebraska Broadcasters Association first-place “Gold Award” for in-depth sports story, with their interview of Winnebago’s state title winning boys basketball coach Jeff Berridge. A 2014 interview with Husker football’s first openly gay player Eric Lueshen earned them awards from both the NBA and Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association. John also won NBA gold in 2015 for his basketball play-by-play, and bronze in 2014.
One of the great honors of his career was riding shotgun with former NU linebacker and iconic Nebraska sportscaster Adrian Fiala on “The Husker Legends Show” from 2012-15, interviewing some of the best Big Red athletes of all time, before Fiala passed away in April 2015.
From 1997-2005, John covered Husker sports for various radio, TV, and print outlets, including KLKN-TV and the Lincoln Journal-Star. From 2002-11, he worked as a sports radio and television commentator in Oregon and Minnesota, and won the South Dakota Associated Press Award for his play-by-play work during his three years in Sioux Falls before coming full circle back to Lincoln.
