An Omaha native and UNL graduate, John Gaskins helped launch The Ticket in August 2011 and has enjoyed life back in Lincoln covering the Huskers. John co-hosts “Gaskins & Stephens” from 11am-2pm and is The Ticket’s program director and high school game announcer.
An interview with Husker football’s first openly gay player Eric Lueshen earned John and Tom talk hosting awards from both the Nebraska Broadcasters Association and Midwest Professional Journalists. John also won an NBA award for his basketball play-by-play in 2014. One of the great honors of his career was riding shotgun with former NU linebacker and iconic Nebraska sportscaster Adrian Fiala on “The Husker Legends Show” from 2012-15, interviewing some of the best Big Red athletes of all time, before Fiala passed away in April 2015.
From 1997-2005, John covered Husker sports for various radio, TV, and print outlets, including KLKN-TV and the Lincoln Journal-Star. From 2002-11, he worked as a sports radio and television commentator in Oregon and Minnesota, and won the South Dakota Associated Press Award for his play-by-play work during his three years in Sioux Falls before coming full circle back to Lincoln.
